Truly modular.

The MONO*JOINT system is a collection of modular components used for furniture design. The system includes all the parts necessary to make rapid furniture forms, allowing for design experimentation and future expansion. It is designed to fit users at any skill level, offering a different experience for every user.

The system can be assembled without the use of any power tools, and without creating a mess. The system allows for metal rods to be screwed together by hand to create furniture forms. The MONO*JOINT system is designed to grow with the user. When the consumer is tired of one design, the parts can easily be swapped out or moved around to create a new piece of furniture all together.

Instead of furniture serving a single purpose, this project reimagines furniture design as a fun project that the user can customise to make it their own. This projects outcome was materialised in the form of four different furniture designs, all made from the same MONO*JOINT components.

Chair.

The chair design features a cross brace on it's legs that wouldn't be possible without the rotating large MONO*JOINT, and uses rods in a new way to form a backrest. The wooden panel is recessed to enhance its appearance and keep the panel from sliding around.

Coffee table.

One of the key designs from this was the coffee table. It features two layers for separate storage, and uses only MONO*MINI parts. The wood was salvaged from the box a sheet metal bender arrived in. This was used to prove just how modular the system is.

Freestyle design.

It proved to be really easy, fun and intuitive to make furniture from scratch with no planned design. Using just a screwdriver it was possible to assemble custom furniture in less than an hour. This freestyle design was done on the bookstand or easel, which I made and designed as I went.

One of my favourite parts of the design is this ability to freestyle a project. It proves that it is possible to make designs on the fly, in a fun and relaxed way.
